about

“This tune is about womanhood. It’s a statement! Hurtling toward the existential void.” - Henry Wagons

“It’s a song that hits hard emotionally and pulls no metaphorical punches. A song that meant one thing when it was written and has more recently revealed additional meaning.” - Chris Familton

“When I’d initially written it, it was a song about what it meant to be a woman or identify as a woman in America, and far elsewhere I’m certain. Both historically and contemporarily and through my own experiences and observations. It was a bit of a cryptic love song to those who endeavour to understand and support women without flinching.
The longer it’s stayed with me though, and particularly through the breakdown of my marriage, I can see what I was really writing about. IN BLATANT ALLEGORY.
Probably best described as the five stages of mourning; denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance… that last part most of all.”
- Amber Rae Slade

lyrics

I got stones in my pockets
Just like Virginia did
Picking apples in this garden
With the ghost of the Sundance kid
Sending letters to my first love telling
Her to burn what she can not keep hid

I got a white flag in my right hand
Red ochre in my fist
The hatred makes me brave baby
But the water it makes me sick
Send word to my mother telling
Her I yearned for more than I could resist

We’ll never be here again
You’ll never be lovelier than you are now and
Everything’s more beautiful
Because were doomed
Oh, Oh, everything’s more beautiful
Because we’re doomed
Because we’re doomed

We manifested this destiny
Just like our daddies done
From Appalachia to the Cordilleras
Oh, how the West was won
And underneath the New Colossus
We traded all our daughters to
First born sons

I wasn’t born with this vengeance
Or a .38 on my hip
Practised in black magic
With a fever on my lips
But this land is his land mama
This land was made for him
Oh, this land is his land man
This land was made for him

We’ll never be here again
You’ll never be lovelier than you are now and
Everything’s more beautiful
Because were doomed
Oh, Oh, everything’s more beautiful
Because we’re doomed
Because we’re doomed
Because we’re doomed
Because we’re doomed
Because we’re doomed

“I was riding in advance and on hearing the firing, I turned on my saddle, and saw the captain reeling in his as though about to fall. I turned my horse and galloped back with all haste to his side and got there in time to catch his as he was falling.”
